Human Hair Wig and Topper Care Guide – Caring for Your Frankie Wig

Human hair behaves like human hair. That’s the whole point — and it’s also why care matters.

Unlike synthetic fibres, a real human hair wig or topper reflects light the way natural hair does. It shifts subtly depending on the environment — from natural daylight to indoor lighting to evening. That’s what makes it undetectable. But it also responds to everything you do, or don’t do. Friction, product build-up, heat and over-washing all affect how it looks, how it moves and how long it lasts.

The principles aren’t complicated. They’re simply the same logic you’d apply to your own hair — adjusted for the fact that this hair isn’t receiving oils from your scalp.

When a piece moves beautifully, you forget you’re wearing it. That’s the goal.

At Frankie Hair Toppers in Sydney, every client is guided through proper human hair wig and topper care from the moment their piece is fitted.

How to Care for a Human Hair Wig or Topper

Unlike your own hair, your wig or topper produces no natural oils and can’t replenish moisture on its own. Gentle, consistent handling makes a bigger difference than any product ever will.

Brush before and after wear using a wide-tooth or loop brush — never a soft bristle brush, which can mat and stress the hair. Always start from the ends and work your way upward, never from the root down. Support the base while brushing so you’re not placing tension on the cap.

Avoid brushing when the hair is wet. Human hair is at its most vulnerable when saturated. Minimise friction from scarves, wool collars and seat belts where possible. When not wearing your piece, store it on a mannequin head or stand away from direct sunlight.

Consistency protects longevity.

How Often to Wash a Human Hair Wig or Topper

Far less often than you would wash your own hair. Your scalp produces oil — your piece does not. Over-washing is one of the most common causes of premature dryness because it strips moisture the hair cannot replace.

For regular daily wear, every four to six weeks is usually appropriate. If you lead a particularly active lifestyle, every ten to fourteen days may be more suitable. For occasional wear, wash only when it genuinely needs it.

If the hair begins to feel heavy, coated or dull, this is usually product build-up. That calls for a deeper cleanse, not more frequent washing.

How to Wash a Human Hair Wig or Topper at Home

Detangle completely before the hair touches water. Use lukewarm water — never hot. Apply a sulphate-free, gentle shampoo in a downward smoothing motion. Avoid scrubbing, circular movements or twisting.

We recommend the Pure Haircare range for washing human hair wigs and toppers. It is sulphate-free and formulated to cleanse without stripping the fibre of essential moisture. Because your piece is not receiving natural oils from the scalp, harsh detergents or heavily fragranced supermarket shampoos can dry the hair and reduce movement over time.

Condition mid-lengths to ends only, never near the base or cap. Rinse thoroughly and allow the hair to air dry flat or on a stand whenever possible.

Never rub or wring the hair. Human hair tangles easily when handled roughly while wet, and that damage is difficult to reverse.

Heat Styling a Human Hair Wig or Topper

One of the advantages of premium human hair is that you can style it exactly as you would your own — blow dry, curl or straighten. However, because this hair is not being nourished from the scalp, lower temperatures are kinder.

Where possible, remain between 120–160°C and always use a heat protectant. The ends are the most vulnerable area and the first to show signs of stress. Treat them gently.

When to Book a Professional Wig Refresh in Sydney

Home washing maintains surface cleanliness. Over time, however, product residue, mineral deposits and environmental exposure embed themselves deeper into the fibre. No amount of standard home washing fully restores that.

If movement disappears, the hair feels coated, or the ends become rough and resist smoothing, it is time for a professional refresh.

A Frankie refresh is not simply a wash. It is a controlled deep cleanse followed by a full restyle — the kind of reset that brings a piece back to how it felt when you first wore it. Professional maintenance significantly extends lifespan and protects your investment, keeping the hair performing the way it should.

A Note from Karen

I would always rather help you get two or three years from a piece than one.

The clients who get the most out of their Frankie wigs and toppers are those who treat them as the premium human hair they are — not as something disposable, and not as something fragile either. Just with steady, thoughtful care.

Every piece purchased from Frankie includes a complimentary professional refresh within the first eight weeks. It’s an opportunity to check the fit, address any care questions and ensure the piece is performing exactly as it should.

If you’re ever unsure whether your piece needs a home wash or a professional refresh, reach out. A short conversation at the right time can prevent the wrong step later.
