How to Care for Human Hair Wigs and Hair Toppers

Your human hair wig or topper is a wearable fibre that responds to environment, friction and product use. Proper maintenance preserves softness, movement and lifespan. Frankie pieces are designed to age naturally when cared for correctly.

Daily Care

  • Gently brush before and after wear using a soft bristle or loop brush
  • Always support the base when brushing
  • Avoid brushing while wet
  • Minimise friction from scarves, wool coats and seat belts
  • Store on a mannequin head and out of sunlight

How Often to Wash

Most pieces are overwashed. Human hair wigs and toppers do not produce oil — your scalp does.

Typical guide
Regular wear: every 4–6 weeks
Active lifestyle: every 10–14 days
Occasional wear: only when needed

If the hair begins to feel heavy, dull or unresponsive, it usually requires a deeper cleanse rather than additional shampoo.

Washing at Home

  • Detangle fully before wetting.
  • Use lukewarm water only.
  • Apply sulphate-free shampoo in a downward motion.
  • Do not scrub or twist.
  • Condition mid-lengths to ends only.
  • Air dry whenever possible.

Never rub or wring the hair.

Heat Styling

Human hair wigs and toppers can be styled using heat, however lower temperatures are recommended (120–160°C). Excessive heat — particularly on the ends — is the most common cause of dryness.

When to Book a Professional Refresh

If movement disappears, the fibre feels coated, ends become rough or styling drops quickly, a professional cleanse is recommended. Home washing removes surface residue, while a controlled restoration removes embedded build-up and restores natural fall.
